Description
Range designed this 30-unit apartment building by first establishing a strong sense of place within its urban context. Working with limited street frontage, the design creates meaningful common areas by organizing three stories of stacked flats around a central shared courtyard.
The entry sequence through a substantial two-story arched opening preserves the individuality and privacy of each dwelling unit while transitioning residents from public street to semi-private community space. Individual apartments front onto this shared courtyard rather than directly onto the street, creating opportunities for neighbor interaction within a carefully designed public realm.
Connections between dwelling units and nature are strengthened through private balconies and large windows, while the masonry construction with corbelling, cast stone details, and deeply set windows creates a sense of permanence. Decorative wrought iron balconies and rooftop cupolas provide elegant counterpoints that maximize both livability and beauty within the efficient floor plans.
