Description
Range designed this mixed-use complex as a collection of distinct buildings that work together to complete a full city block in downtown Fayetteville. Rather than creating one monolithic structure, the design organizes residential apartments and ground-floor retail as separate facades along three street frontages, each with its own architectural character. The upper residential floors step back from the street edge to maintain compatibility with the surrounding neighborhood scale while maximizing unit count.
Traditional materials including pressed metal, cut stone, and cast iron provide authentic detailing that connects to Fayetteville's historic building vocabulary. Simple masonry forms serve as the foundation for these ornamental elements.
A key design challenge was accommodating necessary parking without compromising the pedestrian experience. The solution conceals a two-story parking structure within the block's interior, invisible from the street but accessible to residents. This approach allows the building facades to engage directly with sidewalk life rather than presenting blank garage walls to downtown.
From a distance, the varied building heights and facade treatments create a distinctive silhouette that serves as a local landmark while maintaining the incremental, human-scaled character that defines walkable downtown neighborhoods.
